Provisioning Effects on Insulin Hormone and Blood Glucose Concentration in Long-tailed Macaques (Macaca fascicularis) in Ngarai Sianok Urban Area, Bukittinggi

Abstract


Background: Human provisioning in tourism areas can influence the dietary patterns of long-tailed macaques (Macaca fascicularis) and potentially affect their physiological conditions, including insulin regulation and glucose metabolism. This study aimed to analyze insulin concentrations and blood glucose levels, and to examine the relationship between the two, in a population of M. fascicularis in the Sianok Canyon Tourism Area, Bukittinggi. Methodology: An observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted at three locations: Belakang Balok (BB), Bukik Cangang Kayu Ramang (BCKR), and Birugo (BR). A total of 23 individuals were captured and analyzed. Blood glucose levels were measured with a portable glucometer, and insulin concentrations were measured by Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA). Differences in glucose levels and insulin concentrations across locations were analyzed using the Kruskal–Wallis test, while the relationship between the two was analyzed using Spearman’s rank correlation. Findings: There were no significant differences in blood glucose levels (p = 0.094) or insulin concentrations (p = 0.962) among the study locations. However, glucose levels had a higher mean rank at BB (15.56) than at BCKR (11.88) and BR (8.07). Spearman's correlation analysis revealed a moderate positive relationship between glucose levels and insulin concentrations (ρ = 0.349), but it was not statistically significant (p = 0.102). Contributions: The study results indicate variations in glucose levels and insulin concentrations among individuals; however, no significant differences were found between locations, nor was there a significant relationship between the two parameters. Further research with larger sample sizes and more controlled physiological measurements is needed to understand variations in the metabolic profile of M. fascicularis in tourism areas
